WHAT TO DO WHEN FIBERGLASS IRRITATES SKIN
Glasswool is the most popular material in the sound insulation industry used in residential buildings in Vietnam and around the world.
Disadvantages of glass wool
Like any insulation material, glass wool has disadvantages. The main disadvantage is the fragility of the fibers. Sharp and thin pieces of these fibers easily penetrate clothing and are difficult to remove and penetrate deeper into the skin, causing itching. Inhaling air with fiberglass fragments can cause long-term lung irritation, as they exit the lungs very slowly. Fiberglass in the eyes is also dangerous. To prevent these phenomena, work with glass wool should be carried out in closed overalls that do not leave exposed areas of the body, canvas gloves, goggles and a respirator.
First aid for people with skin irritation due to glass wool construction:
  • If glass wool gets on your skin, you should never scratch it, so you're just driving the debris into your skin.
  • Try to gently shake the fiberglass out of your hair, lower your head into the empty bathtub, close your eyes and shake your head.
  • Shower in cold water under high pressure without detergent. Do not rub the skin with a towel, sponge or use hot water, as it dilates the skin's pores.
  • After bathing, do not dry yourself with a towel. Wait for the body to dry, and take a cold shower again, with soap.
  • If glass wool gets into your eyes, flush them with a strong stream of cold water. If irritation persists, consult an ophthalmologist immediately, preferably in an eye surgery clinic, or call an ambulance.
  • If you inhale pieces of glass wool, in case of persistent cough, difficulty breathing, etc., consult a doctor immediately.
  • Glasses are best removed. Even repeated thorough rinsing does not guarantee complete removal of fiber.
