What is U-value?
What is the U value and how important is it in construction?
The U-value is a widely preferred unit in EU countries that tells specifiers, builders, architects and engineers how well a material insulates. There is also an R-value that will indicate this, but U values are preferred in the UK as they give a more accurate and rounded picture of heat loss from the material. This is because U values take into account conduction, convection and radiation. The U-value indicates the amount of heat lost through a given thickness of a material by dividing the temperature difference inside and outside the material by the heat transfer rate. Since U-values figure out how much heat is lost, the lower the U-value, the better.
What is the U value and how important is it in construction?
There are guidelines in the UK, set out in the Building Regulations Approval Document Part L (Fuel and Energy Conservation), which give the maximum U-values that materials and structures are allowed to have in a range of buildings, including domestic properties. It is expected that homes must be built to a certain energy efficiency standard for both reducing carbon emissions and reducing residents' heating bills.
How do you calculate a U-value?
W/m2K is the unit of U values and it stands for Watts/meter Kelvin squared. U-value is the most difficult heat measurement to calculate so we recommend running the numbers through reliable U-value calculation software. This software is available and used by architects and specifiers to ensure they produce thermally efficient buildings. Little things like insulating fixtures and mortar will affect the overall U-value, it's difficult to work out exactly what it will be, so it's best to leave it in the calculator.
When evaluating a material's insulating ability, you want a low U-value. For example, single-glazed windows can have a U-value as high as 5.8 while VELUX PassivHaus quad-pane windows boast a U-value of 0.51. The difference in performance is absolutely phenomenal.
